The internet in today's digital era is very closely related to everyday life. Starting from young people to adults, the majority use the internet as a media to assist in carrying out and connecting various human activities effectively, accurately and efficiently. Well, for most people, you may already be very familiar with the notion of the internet.

For individuals, the millennial generation may be very closely related to internet use. However, for those outside this generation, most of them still have difficulty accessing the internet network through their media devices. In this article, we will explain some things about the meaning of the internet, as well as its history, development, and benefits.

Understanding the Internet
The internet is a communication network that has a function to connect one electronic media to another quickly and precisely. The communication network will convey some information that is sent via signal transmission with an adjusted frequency. For global standards in the use of the internet network itself using TCP / IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol).

The term TCP/IP is a form of packet exchange protocol used by various global/world users. Then, the process of connecting between internet circuits is called "internetworking". According to one expert in the IT field, Onno W. Purbo (2005) explains that the notion of the internet is a medium used to streamline the communication process using applications such as websites, email, or voip.

Definition of the Internet According to Experts
There are several general definitions of the internet which are explained by experts, including the following.

1. O'Brien
According to O'Brien, the internet is a computer network that is growing very rapidly. Where, the use of the internet can bring benefits and positive impacts to the world of education, business, to government.

2. Berners Lee
According to Berners Lee, the internet is a network consisting of several networks in it. The concept means, a computer or local network that is connected to another network.

3. Sarwono
According to Sarwono, the notion of the internet itself is a collection of networks on a global scale, where no one is responsible for driving the internet itself.

Internet History
Next, enter the history of the internet for the first time in the world. Around the 1960s, the US Department of Defense through ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) created a network system called the ARPANET. ARPANET itself is the forerunner of the birth of network technology. In America itself, network technology is still used by a limited circle in the campus scope around the 1980s.

Then, the standard protocol TCP / IP began to be published in 1982. Around 1986, the NSFNET (National Science Foundation Network) was established which replaced the role of the ARPANET to accommodate research and research activities in America. And, in 1990, the ARPANET began to be lowered and with the same service the World Wide Web (WWW) was introduced by CERN.

And finally, in 1993, InterNIC began to develop to register domain names from the public. For the history of the internet in Indonesia itself, it started in 1994 which was introduced by several experts in the field of information technology at that time.

Internet Development
After knowing a brief history of the internet starting from the formation of the internet for the first time, the next section will discuss the development of the internet globally. From year to year, the development of the internet has undergone significant changes in terms of coverage, transmission, speed, and usage.

In terms of coverage itself, it covers the regional scale or the limit of the availability of internet access coverage in certain areas. Currently, many countries are competing to expand their network using satellite. With the satellite, it is able to reach a wider area.

Next is the development of the internet on the transmission of data packets used. For now, the data transmission process is very different from previous years. Because it is supported by many of the latest and more modern technologies that are in accordance with the concept and understanding of the internet.

In terms of speed, many technology industries are developing several generations of networks. Starting from 2G, 3G, 4G, to the latest now is 5G. Of course, to be able to use 5G internet network technology requires considerable resources for a country.

And finally, the development of the internet in terms of its use. The development of information technology is endless. So, a lot of changes have happened
starting from the information, communication and devices used. If the initial development of the internet was used for military research needs, for now the scope is even more. Such as use for the fields of education, social, political, cultural, military, communication, information, business, and so on.

2. Education Sector
In the field of education itself, the use of the internet is one of the important factors that help in the learning and learning process. Users can access and obtain various information related to modules, articles, journals, general knowledge, and so on. Thus, each individual can find various things through a search engine that is connected to a stable and good internet network.

      3. Information Field
Currently, a lot of information is popping up through various existing devices. This is because the internet is a provider of information sources that are considered more effective than we have to watch or use electronic media such as radio, television, and newspapers to get information and actual news quickly.

In accordance with the notion of the internet itself, many electronic media in the 21st century have used the internet to provide information quickly, with a wider reach. For example, print media companies in addition to providing news through newspapers, also open media channels on the internet to get news not only from within the country, but also internationally.

      4. Health Sector
Lots of health references, and services for online treatment services. This is a form of internet benefits in the health sector. You can simply search for various needs such as drugs, prescriptions, healthy lifestyles, and hospital referrals through the internet.

      5. Social and Entertainment Sector
The last field that is widely used by the millennial generation is the use of the internet to access various existing sites and social media. Such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and so on. Some of these platforms provide features and access that is easy enough for everyone to be able to connect well even if they communicate over long distances.

Negative impact
The following are some of the negative impacts that can occur from uncontrolled or optimally monitored internet use.

1. The emergence of Cyber Crime
The first negative impact is that it creates many crimes such as cases of data hacking or online fraud. In addition, it can also trigger hacking, spamming, or cracking by irresponsible people.

Therefore, there is a need for special security to maintain the confidentiality of your personal data so that it is not easy to be hacked by irresponsible parties. One way to overcome this is to use the dual login and authentication feature.

2. Illegal Content Creation and Distribution
Furthermore, the internet also has the potential to spread content in the form of videos or writings that contain pornographic or pornographic elements. So, this can certainly result in underage users being able to see the content explicitly.

The solution to overcome this is to always monitor the use of the internet for parents to children or underage users, so that they are wise in using the internet.

3. The Spread of Hate Speech
The last impact is the internet as a medium to manipulate or develop massive hate speech practices. This is because on the internet itself there is still a lack of restrictions on content that is considered dangerous and can lead to fake news or hoaxes.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to select and sort content, news, or articles by looking for other reference sources. Also make sure to look for trusted reference sources to avoid fake news or lead to hate speech.,107389
